Unappreciated Games

Many games are lost for their lack of reputation. Big name titles such a Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts are good, but other worthy titles are forgotten in the dust. An example of this was Shadow Hearts. A new breed of RPG, using the powerful Judgment Ring System, while it was criticized for using 2d backgrounds, everything else truly shined for a game in 2000. However, it was left for dead because Final Fantasy X came out around the same week. A true shame indeed.

You bring up a good point Eclipse, I know exactly what you mean. The gaming community is so mainstreamed nowadays that most people miss out on great games because it's not on the top 20 lists.

I can name a few incidents like this right off of the top of my head, like for the PS2 Monster Hunter; I don't know many who even know what this is (MH2 is better IF you can get the translated version) it had everything from customizing armor, weapons, classes, to multiplayer campaigns (I don't know a single person who's beaten it first-hand alone) but it had all of these features and just because it wasn't advertised right it stayed in Japan mostly until it got big with the PSP versions.

Another franchise that got overruled by all of the Final Fantasy fanboyz/girlz is Front Mission. I mean it's been around since the days of SNES in 1995. For the most part, it's a RPG/RTS or a Turn-based RPG with giant walking battle tanks that are about the size of your house wielding guns just as big as metro busses. There is deep gameplay involved and the story-telling (In my opinion) far outdoes the FF series. I've played Front Mission 3 on the PS1 and am ecstatic about it! Unfortunately, it seems the series has taken a nosedive into the 3rd person shooter equivalent, but hey it might turn around right?

Well, that's just 2 games I wanted to talk about... Can you think of anymore Eclipse? If the case is yes, then I'll make a lil thread just for the summaries of games, I've been thinking of it for a while. I also need a few mods here and there for making new posts and stickies and such. Also, since mush003 hasn't responded to anything I've sent, I'm not really counting him right now until he makes a post or makes some kind of stirring on the forum to let us know he's alive. (Might just email him though) If you want I'll make you a mod on that section.

I would have to disagree with you there Eclipse, Harvest Moon is most definitely NOT an unappreciated game. It's the only successful game of its genre and it has dozens of games on varying systems of which are basic clones of each other. There is no uniqueness from any of the newer ones, hence it seems they are coming from a game factory. No discussion needed for this game, lol. In fact you could state that this game is Over appreciated game. I mean the only game I can think of off the top of my head right now is Boombots for the PSX, it had claymation videos and almost no voice acting but it was a unique fighting game nonetheless. Only god knows how much time that I've killed playing that game.

Well, B@ckd00r, I must admit you do have a point. When it comes to Harvest Moon, it is kept alive by the fans who play it. Same with other games. For example, Disgaea is not a best seller that people try to kill each other for the moment Black Friday is upon us. But,the people it does attract are many, enough to encourage the company to make sequel. It's all based on peoples tastes.

I wish that more people would look for those games in the hopes that it would help more game companies that have a fresh and new look at the gaming genre. Look at left 4 dead, looks great plays great and is a nice game. However, there's a company called Tripwire Interactive that created a mod for UT2004 which overtime won a contest and became a full-fledged game, and while I do love Left 4 Dead's genre, I like Killing Floor's atmosphere better just because it's generally darker, more gruesome and frightening to play alone. Play Left 4 Dead, you can't play alone because you'll die as soon as a special infected grabs you, while you can play Killing Floor alone in the dark, and you won't want to ever again on certain levels. Left 4 Dead is made by a mainstream company, but Killing Floor was fresh out-of-the-box thinking new, plus it's UK so it really is different hearing "I'll get you, you lil' bastard" in a British accent, but so much more amusing.

PS- FEAR 1 + extraction beats the scare factor to shit with any of these titles though, lol I'm still afraid of little girls in red dresses and even more so of the bigger girls with long hair (If you beat FEAR 1 you know who I'm talking about)

Lol, woooooow..... Did I just hear you say worms? That gave me a flashback of worms 2 back in the day. I dunno if Team17 is still around, god, I know Titus isn't. Hmmmm... what else is in the hidden Gem collection......... (Thinking back to my old PC Gamer 1997 edition demo disc) Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri? That ring a bell? I can go as far back as Dreadnaught if I wanted to, in case you're wondering here's the links


Dreadnaught is one of the most unheard of games ever, trust me. I can't even find the damn game online, it was made by Psychosis and it was REALLY good for its age, almost like a precursor to those Star Trek games.

Since we are about to go back in time to the days of the Playstation 1 and NES, may I add that retro games are great for nostalgic gamers? The one retro I want to try is Dino Crisis. I know its owned by Capcom, so there is hope that the will get a message and try to recreate the forgotten horror. It was like Resident Evil, but was deemed 'unworthy' because of RE (Yes, I know, made by the same company). Plus, it was different for survival horrors at the time. Instead of aliens or zombie-infected enemies, you are going against prehistoric terrors that actually use their significant AI minds. So, hats off to Dino Crisis.

Ahhhh, I remember Dino Crisis. Yeah it was just like Resident Evil 2 in a way, just with way shittier controls. You know, take zombies out of the mix add dinosaurs in a different place with shitty controls, nothing more scary than a really good survival horror with dinos than a really good survival horror with dinos and shitty controls....

O.k., o.k., so the stuff I heard might not be true.

But, with controls, it can vary by person. And I'm quite sure I can get my point across. Since they are remaking games, Dino Crisis should be a target. I mean, improve graphics and controls, give AI some stuff like reaction to other dinos in the area, add aerial and aquatic dinos as you try to escape on helicopter or boat, context sensitive controls when in certain events or when pinned based on health, as well as some other stuff, and I'm quite sure it can become a best seller.

I'm sure as well, and it's not that I didn't like the game it just seems scarier when you KNOW that you won't be able to turn around in time to shoot.

Oh, and on the Worms topic, look into the Xbox. It has a Worms game.

First 'Worms', now 'Starcraft'. This is quite a diverse topic. Any other games you wish to praise that seem to have bitten the dust? I wanna get a list going.

Heroes of Might and Magic II/III

Best damn strategies I ever played, and with II you can even get a 500 mb mod that adds tons of shit to the game, new monsters, quests, it basically doubles the replay value. don't bother looking for a good story though, and if you're looking for something nice to start out on, I would recommend II over III just for nostalgia's sake lol. But seriously, the fan bases for these games came out a year or two after the games were released, and even still I'm betting that the games were overshadowed by the well-known games of that time.

Shit! I forgot my favorite strategy game of all time, it brought Hell-March to the front lines and was really the best strategy game for its time and I gotta say is REALLY more intricate than some that are going on now, this game may not have started the modern RTS genre, but it definitely set the bar...

Favorite Game ever, 'nuff said lol, but yea someone should start making a list of this stuff.
